Equipment and Field Upgrades
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has 9 tactical grenades and gadgets, 11 lethals and 12 Field Upgrades at launch. Each unlocks at a set Player Level; the Riot Shield is now a Field Upgrade, and Trip Wire, Smoke Wall and Razor Wire Trap are new.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 gives every class one tactical, one lethal and one Field Upgrade, chosen from 9 tacticals, 11 lethals and 12 Field Upgrades at launch, as Activision's Oct 19, 2026 launch blog lists them. The Flash Grenade, Smoke Grenade, Frag Grenade, Sticky Grenade, Portable Radar and DDOS are ready at Level 4; the rest unlock by Player Level up to the Screamer Mine at Level 53. Field Upgrades charge over the match at a fast, medium or slow rate. New this year are the networked Trip Wire, the rocket-laid Smoke Wall and the Razor Wire Trap, and the Riot Shield has moved from the weapon list to the Field Upgrades. The clip is WhosImmortal going through the tactical and lethal lists in Create-a-Class.

The Flash and Concussion nerfs and the Battle Hardened buff came together in the launch patch notes: Battle Hardened now negates most effects of the Flash, the Concussion and the Screamer Mine. The Stim is the tactical for players who run Blood Rush, since it refreshes Tactical Sprint.

The Trip Wire is the new trap: Activision's Aug 21 multiplayer blog says several Trip Wires, your squadmates' included, link into one network that can run along the ground, wall to wall or vertically. The Drill Charge is the answer to campers behind walls, and the Lethal Reach Perk throws any of these farther with a visible arc. Bomb Squad (Perk 2) cuts the damage you take from them and resets the fuse on a live grenade you pick up.
Field Upgrades
A Field Upgrade charges during the match; the blog rates each one's recharge as Fast, Medium or Slow. The clip is WhosImmortal's Select Field Upgrade screen, on the Portable Radar.
| Field Upgrade | Unlocks at level | Recharge | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable Radar | 4 | Medium | Periodic radar pings show nearby enemies |
| DDOS | 4 | Fast | A pulse that briefly jams nearby enemy electronics and sensors |
| Munitions Box | 6 | Medium | Ammo and equipment for you and teammates |
| SAM Airburst Turret | 8 | Slow | Portable missile turret against aerial threats |
| Riot Shield | 11 | Medium | Destructible shield, can be planted as cover, heavy melee knocks enemies down |
| Trophy System | 14 | Fast | Destroys up to three projectiles in the air |
| Seeker Drone | 19 | Slow | Hunts nearby enemies to snapshot them |
| Inflatable Decoy | 25 | Medium | A dummy that pops up to confuse, by proximity or by hand |
| Smoke Wall | 29 | Medium | A hand-held rocket that lays a long wall of smoke |
| Recon Drone | 33 | Slow | Remote drone that marks enemies, manually or automatically |
| Razor Wire Trap | 41 | Medium | Barbed wire that snares and hurts anyone pushing through |
| Tactical Insertion | 45 | Medium | Marks your next spawn point |

Three Field Upgrades are new or reworked, per the Aug 21 blog. The Riot Shield is no longer a weapon: it is a destructible Field Upgrade you can plant as mountable cover. The Smoke Wall rocket flies forward over obstacles and leaves a long trail of smoke that gunfire disrupts and explosives disperse. The Razor Wire Trap snares enemies on contact; pushing through costs speed and health, and melee or gunfire clears it. The blog then counted 11 Field Upgrades; the Oct 19 blog and the launch notes list 12.
The Portable Radar had two launch bugs: it did not work in Free-for-All (fixed Oct 23) and showed no minimap in Hardcore (fixed Oct 24), the launch patch notes say.
Perks that change equipment
- Resupply (Perk 1, Level 31): equipment recharges over time, +1 maximum capacity, faster Field Upgrade charge; buffed for launch to give the first recharge sooner.
- Lethal Reach (Perk 3, Level 4): throw equipment farther, with the arc shown.
- Battle Hardened (Perk 3, Level 12) and Bomb Squad (Perk 2, Level 16): resist tacticals and explosives.
- Combat Grid (Perk 3, Level 4): see enemy equipment and Field Upgrades through walls.
- Cold-Blooded (Perk 3, Level 36): hidden from Recon Drones and Snapshot Grenades; Ghost (Perk 1, Level 24) hides you from Portable Radars and Heartbeat Sensors.
