DMZ Progression and Forward Operating Base

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is DMZ's hub in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, where you keep a shared Stash, craft at the 3D Printer, buy at the Vendor and Gunsmith, and run up to three Active Duty Operators with Trait Trees. DMZ has its own Levels 1 to 70, Operator Dog Tag levels up to Onyx III, and Operator Prestige from 200,000 DMZ Cash.

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is the hub of DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: the place between deployments where you store loot in a shared Stash, craft at the 3D Printer, buy from the Vendor and the Gunsmith, track bosses and pick which Operator to send into Hajin. Activision's Hajin deep dive (Oct 5, 2026) says it grows "from a foothold to a fully operational base with over a dozen different Stations", and the FOB deep dive (Oct 9, 2026) explains every station. Progression runs on three tracks: your DMZ Level (1 to 70), each Operator's Dog Tag level (18 Trait Points), and Operator Prestige. This page covers all three. What the mode is, in brief, is on DMZ. The clip is the official DMZ Progression trailer, with the FOB, a Trait Tree, Operator selection, the Stash, the Gunsmith and the 3D Printer.

The FOB

The FOB is in third person by default, so squadmates can see each other's Operators and which station each is using, as Infinity Ward's Joe Cecot told Xbox Wire (Jun 7, 2026). Some stations are open from your first visit and others open as you level.

Stash, Bank and what you keep

The Stash is shared by all your Operators and starts at 40 items and 12 weapons, counted separately; it holds weapons, gear, consumables, crafting ingredients, Keys and valuables (Oct 9 deep dive). DMZ Cash sits in a Bank, or Wallet, which pays for weapons, attachments, MIA rescues and Lieutenant intel, and has a cap: when it is full and the Stash is too, you may have to throw things away. Activision has not published the cap. GameSpot (Oct 20, 2026) advises upgrading Bank and Stash early because "insufficient bank storage wastes money."

In a match, anything in your Backpack outside a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to exfil. With no backpack you carry the eight-slot Basic Pack; the Small Backpack adds slots, the Medium Backpack adds Secure Slots, and Weapon Backpacks carry extra guns. Every backpack has a separate pouch for resources.

Operators, MIA and recovery

You start with two Active Duty Operator slots and get a third at DMZ Level 15; Vault Edition owners start with three. An Operator stays in a slot until dismissed, cannot fill two slots, and keeps their own Backpack, loadout and Trait Tree, though you can change their skin (Oct 9 deep dive).

An Operator who dies goes Missing in Action and cannot deploy until recovered. Recovery costs DMZ Cash, more for each Trait Point the Operator has, and keeps the Traits but not the gear; you can also dismiss the Operator and start over. Cecot's plan in the Xbox Wire interview is a geared fighter plus a "cash mule" who earns money from vaults and Dynamic Ops to rescue the fighter. Cash and resources are shared, so Activision suggests looting with an Operator whose Traits find valuables (Investor, Container Looter, Hostile Looter) and spending the proceeds on the others.

DMZ levels unlock four Operators of the 33 at launch: Reece at Level 4, Coffey at 9, Simone at 15 and Hector at 19, per Activision's Operators blog (Oct 19, 2026). Every Operator works in both Multiplayer and DMZ; the full list is on Operators.

Traits and Dog Tag levels

Each Operator levels through 18 Dog Tag ranks, Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, each I to III, and every rank gives one Trait Point, so an Operator has at most 18. There are three Trait Trees, Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, with 66 Traits in all: 22 per tree, six Major Traits always shown and 16 Minor Traits drawn at random. A full tree takes nine points, so 18 points fill two trees, and picks are locked in.

Tree Traits Activision describes
Warfighter Adrenaline Burst (a kill resets tactical sprint), Equipment Professional (Lethals and Tacticals slowly recharge), Combat Resistance (less explosive and Tactical effect), Viper Sense (hidden from thermal optics and AI targeting), Quick Fix (faster health regeneration after a kill), Possum (once a match, come back into Last Stand from death)
Scout Investor (a little more cash extracted), Hostile Looter (enemies sometimes drop printer ingredients), Container Looter (a chance of an extra item), Thermal Padding (hidden from UAVs), UAV Upgrade (Advanced UAVs), Overwatch (your UAV Towers never expire), Field Crafting (craft from Common resources in the field)
Survivalist Air Superiority (UAV Towers and SAM Sites last longer), Faster Revive, Consumable Duration, Impact Smokes (smoke when downed), Free Revive (repairs your first wound), Numb the Pain, Die Hard (exfil called automatically in Last Stand, endless bleed-out)

Possum has drawn complaints. Dexerto (Oct 21, 2026) reports players asking for it to be reworked or removed because it works after a full kill and makes no sound; Infinity Ward had not answered as of that report.

Operator Prestige

An Operator at 18 Trait Points (Onyx III) who is not MIA can Prestige. It uses up gear and cash, resets the Traits, and grants a random Permanent Prestige Trait tied to that Operator, up to three; from the fourth Prestige you are offered a new one to swap in or discard (Oct 9 deep dive). Operator Prestige is separate from the Multiplayer Prestige.

Prestige Weapons Gear Ingredients DMZ Cash
First 2 weapons with 3 attachment slots (Rare or better) Rare Plate Carrier and Backpack 4 Rare 200,000
Second 2 weapons with 4 slots Epic 4 Epic 300,000
Third and later 2 weapons with 4 slots Legendary 4 Legendary 500,000

The 3D Printer and crafting

The 3D Printer opens at DMZ Level 2. It makes gear and ingredients and upgrades the other stations, but never prints primary, secondary or melee weapons. Crafting takes a Recipe, Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals, which take no Stash space) and 3D Printer Ingredients such as Binding Catalyst or Reactive Metals. Recipes come from levels, Orders, or extracting with a looted Recipe (Oct 9 deep dive).

Starter recipe (Level 2) Cost
Bandage 15 Synthetics, 15 Chemicals
Medkit 30 Chemicals, 1 Binding Catalyst, 5 Biomaterials
1-Plate Armor Vest 25 Synthetics, 25 Metals
2-Plate Armor Vest 50 Synthetics, 5 Reactive Metals
Small Backpack 25 Synthetics, 25 Metals
Medium Backpack 50 Synthetics, 5 Rigid Synthetics

The permanent FOB upgrades are printed too, each over several prints: Bank upgrades, Stash item and weapon capacity, MIA recovery discounts and rarer ingredient printing, plus Dog Tag Case slots, Gunsmith discounts and Vendor offers. The clip is MrDalekJD at the 3D Printer, on Stash Item Upgrade I, Bank Upgrade III and Uncommon Ingredient Printing.

Vendor and Gunsmith

The Vendor (Level 5) sells weapons and items for DMZ Cash; its stock changes day to day and improves with your DMZ Level, and GameSpot notes that teammates may see different offers. The Gunsmith (Level 10) sells base weapons and attachments; a base M4 costs about 5,000 DMZ Cash, each extra attachment slot costs more than the last, and the Apex slot is free once the weapon is leveled. To buy a weapon as often as you like, first extract with its Weapon Manual. Any Blueprint you own can be used once free, then bought again at a discount; camos and stickers cost nothing. Weapon levels and attachments are shared with Multiplayer (see Gunsmith and Attachments).

DMZ Level 1 to 70

DMZ has its own Player Level, 1 to 70, separate from Multiplayer's 1 to 55. DMZ XP also counts toward the Multiplayer levels, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP never raise the DMZ Level, per Activision's progression blog (Oct 19, 2026). XP comes from Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops and other activities, and it is kept even when you die. The milestones:

Survival Kits and the Vault Edition bonus

Survival Kits are themed loot packs (Deployment, Triage, Armor, Equipment and SERE Kits) that stack until you open them into the Stash; they come from levels, Orders, missions and Events. The Vault Edition's DMZ Deployment Bonus is one: two each of Weapon Insurance Contracts, Operator Rescue Beacons, Fulton Drop Markers, Medium Backpacks and 2-Plate Carriers (Oct 9 deep dive). Activision has not explained how a Weapon Insurance Contract works as of Oct 25, 2026. Editions are compared on Editions and Pre-order Bonuses.

A chart over a hooded soldier in a skull mask holding a rifle: rows for Full Game Download, Campaign Early Access, Hunter Killer Operator Skin and Gilded Pearl Camo Pack are checked for both Standard and Vault Edition; Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell (1 Season) and DMZ Deployment Bonus are checked only for Vault Edition.
Steam's edition comparison for Modern Warfare 4: both editions include the full game, campaign early access, the Hunter Killer operator skin and the Gilded Pearl camo pack; the Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell for one season and a DMZ Deployment Bonus Activision

Camos, Calling Cards and beta rewards

The camo grind is shared with Multiplayer, and DMZ challenges ask for higher counts because AI kills count there. DMZ has three Mastery Camos: Chiral (2,500 kills of Tier 3 or higher enemies), Ripple Tide (extract two Lieutenant Dog Tags in one deployment, 50 times) and Helio (25,000 kills with Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator), per the progression blog. DMZ Calling Cards fall under DMZ Mastery and Elite DMZ Mastery, including "King Slayer" for Commander kills. Players of the 2022 DMZ beta on the same Activision account receive emblems and Calling Cards from Oct 20, 2026. More is on Camos.
