Story
Modern Warfare 4's campaign follows two stories that meet at the end: Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean conscript fighting a North Korean invasion that begins in Hajin City, and an outlaw Captain Price, who allies with Valeria Garza's cartel to hunt the arms dealer known as the Archer. It is set after Modern Warfare 3 and closes the rebooted Modern Warfare story of Price and Task Force 141.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's story is a war on the Korean Peninsula told from two sides: you play "the role of Private Park Hyun Jun as he and his squad fight back against a full-scale invasion across the Korean Peninsula," while "operator-turned outlaw John Price sets off on a hunt for the one pulling the strings" (Call of Duty, Oct 16, 2026). The 16 missions move between Korea, Paris, New York and Mumbai, and the game is set after Modern Warfare 3 (2023), wrapping up the Makarov storyline (PCGamesN, Jul 25, 2026). The first sections below are spoiler-light, built from Activision's own descriptions and spoiler-free reviews; a marked section after them covers the plot as guides describe it. For the missions one by one, see Campaign Walkthrough. The clip is Activision's Campaign Trailer, from the plan to "shut down the peninsula, then we invade" to the question of who is working with the cartel.

The premise
The campaign opens with the invasion: "It all kicks off with the full-scale invasion of South Korea's Hajin City," Activision writes (Call of Duty, Sep 16, 2026). Park is "a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad," and "What begins as a routine mission descends into chaos when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion" (Call of Duty, Jun 12, 2026). Hajin City is fictional; Mission 1: Mayhem and Mission 5: Losing Ground follow "a futile attempt to hold" it (PC Gamer, Oct 16, 2026). In the clip, from Infinity Ward's From The Ward series, the developers explain that Hajin is where the conflict breaks out and the first place North Korea invades.
The second story belongs to Price. "With Task Force 141 disbanded and former allies hunting him, Captain Price is on the run," and he is "Forced into an uneasy alliance with Valeria Garza," the leader of the Las Almas cartel (Call of Duty, read Oct 25, 2026). His target is a weapons pipeline: a "weapon of war" is being delivered to "a dangerous enemy known only as 'The Archer'," and Laswell asks him in the Tokyo Game Show trailer, "What do you think happens when that weapon gets to the Archer?" (Call of Duty, Sep 17, 2026). His former comrades Ghost and Gaz "are tasked to capture or kill their former captain." More on him at Captain Price.
Steam's store text frames the pair as "A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows," and promises that "long-running storylines" reach "a powerful and emotional breaking point" (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026).
Setting: why Korea
Infinity Ward chose Korea partly because Korean culture (food, cinema, K-pop) has spread worldwide, and some missions take place inside North Korea, a first for the series (Dexerto, May 28, 2026). Studio co-head Mark Grigsby said South Korean advisors guided dialect, culture and casting, and that some writing changed on a dialect coach's notes; players see the war from North Korea, South Korea and Price's rogue unit, converging in a finale, and "about 50%" of the game is "war" levels, the rest tactical spec ops (PCGamesN, Jul 25, 2026). In the clip a developer describes the dialogue coaches and reviewing every line for the right regional dialect.
Activision's campaign page sums up the locations: "trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, high-octane chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city-wide assaults to reclaim occupied territory" (Call of Duty, read Oct 25, 2026). In Korea, Park's unit is "forced through collapsing cities, entrenched positions and brutal counteroffensives," with amphibious assaults alongside "joint U.S. and ROK Marine forces."
The five-day timeline
The campaign covers about five days, and it does not run in order: Mission 2: Out in the Cold jumps back to "just 5 days before North Korea's attacks on South Korea" (Windows Central, Oct 17, 2026). GameSpot describes "shifting POVs and a non-chronological story" (GameSpot, Oct 16, 2026): Park's war in Korea alternates with Price's hunt, and one early mission, Mission 3: Following Orders, puts you in the boots of a North Korean soldier sweeping a village for a defector.
The game also offers optional dialogue prompts, first seen in Modern Warfare 2 (2022); they add flavor but do not change the story (GameSpot, Oct 16, 2026).

How it connects to the earlier Modern Warfare games
Modern Warfare 4 is the fourth game of the rebooted Modern Warfare series, and the game itself "plays a lengthy recap video" of the events that made Price a fugitive (PC Gamer, Oct 16, 2026). Activision's official "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | A Narrative Recap" video runs 2 minutes 24 seconds, and its "Story So Far" post tells the same history in text (Call of Duty, Sep 16, 2026): In the clip Infinity Ward recalls Price's 2019 line about drawing the line and calls him an outlaw after the events of the last game.
- Modern Warfare (2019): Price and Gaz respond to Al-Qatala's attack on Piccadilly Circus; in Urzikstan, Farah Karim and Alex Keller fight on until Farah kills General Barkov. Afterward Price requests the files of Gaz, Johnny "Soap" MacTavish and Simon "Ghost" Riley and forms Task Force 141 with Laswell's support.
- Modern Warfare 2 (2022): General Shepherd and Phillip Graves's Shadow Company smuggled US missiles that the Konni Group intercepted for Makarov; Valeria's Las Almas Cartel was paid to move them, and Graves betrayed Task Force 141 in Las Almas.
- Modern Warfare 3 (2023): Makarov shot Soap in the tunnels beneath London; Price then assassinated General Shepherd and went underground to hunt Makarov.
That last act is why Task Force 141 is disbanded at the start of Modern Warfare 4 (Call of Duty, Sep 17, 2026). GameSpot calls the game "an epic conclusion to the rebooted series" that "closes out the ongoing narrative surrounding Price and Task Force 141," and notes an echo of Price's 2019 line about where to "draw the line": Gaz now tells him "There is a line... and it's one we don't cross," and Price answers "We draw the line wherever we need it, don't we?" (GameSpot, Oct 16, 2026; Call of Duty, Sep 17, 2026). Insider Gaming names Modern Warfare 2 (2009) as a major inspiration (Insider Gaming, Oct 18, 2026). The trailer opens on that exchange.
The plot (spoilers)
Spoilers for the whole campaign follow, as Insider Gaming's and Game Rant's plot guides describe it.
The invasion and the hunt. The war opens with a widespread EMP attack on South Korea, followed by the North Korean invasion (Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026). Five days earlier, Price tracks Milena Romanova, the Konni Group's financier, to a nightclub, kills her, then chases Makarov and beats him to death after a fistfight (Game Rant, Oct 19, 2026). Captured afterward, he is taken to Valeria, who offers him a way to take down the Archer, "the head of the snake" (Windows Central, Oct 17, 2026).
North Korea's coup. In the North, Commander Ri Ju-Young executes a defector and burns a village, and Lieutenant Ko Jin-Hyuk is warned about her by the defector. Ju-Young, Ko and Supreme Leader Ri Seung-Ho meet the Archer and offer support for his plans; Seung-Ho hesitates. Backed by the Archer, Ju-Young kills her brother in Mission 8: Assassins and makes herself Supreme Leader, and Ko defects to help South Korea (Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026). The clip is the coup in the bunker from MrRoflWaffles' playthrough, ending with "Go finish what your father started."
Price, the cartel and Task Force 141. Shadow Company, led by Graves, tries to intercept the package in Mission 4: Hired Gun, and Price kills Graves after Graves tries to talk him out of revenge. In Mission 7: Gone Dark, Ghost and Gaz fight the cartel and then Price; the cartel captures them, and Price poses as a captive while the Archer meets Valeria to trade money for another EMP device. The Archer anticipates the betrayal, kills Valeria and her team, and takes Price, Ghost and Gaz prisoner (Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026).
The Archer revealed. The Archer plans to frame Task Force 141 for Seung-Ho's murder and shoots Gaz in Mission 13: Escape; Price gets Ghost to safety, is recaptured, and learns the Archer is Makarov's father. The EMPs are only the start of a planned Russian invasion of Europe (Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026); Kotaku describes the Archer as Russia's Defense Minister, who wants a new Russian empire (Kotaku, Oct 20, 2026).
The finale. Park's war turns: a beach assault in Mission 12: Counter Attack, and in Mission 15: Decapitation South Korean forces, with Ghost's help, kill Ju-Young; Game Rant says Park fires the shot. In Mission 16: Greater Good, Ghost attacks the convoy carrying the Archer and Price, and Price kills the Archer, then dies of his wounds with Ghost beside him (Game Rant, Oct 19, 2026; Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026). After the credits, Laswell deletes the files on Gaz, Ghost and Price. The full ending is on Ending and Post-Credits Scene.
