Movement and Gunplay

Modern Warfare 4 keeps slide canceling but has no omnimovement; it adds Mantle Slide, Supine Slide, pipe climbing and ledge moves, and puts Tactical Sprint on the Blood Rush perk. Hipfire has no bloom, and the time to kill is the slightly slower Beta Weekend 2 tuning players preferred.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 keeps slide canceling and sliding into aim, but it has no omnimovement: you cannot sprint and slide in every direction as in recent Black Ops games. Instead Infinity Ward added new ways to move over and around the map, such as the Mantle Slide, the Supine Slide, pipe climbing and moves while hanging from ledges, and moved Tactical Sprint onto the Blood Rush perk. On the gunplay side, hipfire has no bloom, and the time to kill (TTK) at launch is the slightly slower Beta Weekend 2 tuning that, by Infinity Ward's account, players preferred at every skill level. The full movement set works in the campaign, multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. The clip is Infinity Ward's designers after a playtest, on mantling into a slide and the new pipe climb.

What returns: slide canceling, no omnimovement

Slide canceling returns, as does sliding straight into aiming down sights, and you can dive backward into prone, as Insider Gaming reported at the reveal on May 28, 2026. What does not return is omnimovement, the Black Ops system that lets you sprint and slide in any direction. Dexerto quotes Infinity Ward's reasoning: "It's okay for Modern Warfare to be different."

Sprinting, sliding, mantling, climbing and going prone can be chained into each other, and sprint landings adapt to the height of the drop and your momentum (Call of Duty). The clip is a designer on ideas such as mantling into a slide and sliding into supine, so the game feels fluid.

New movement in Modern Warfare 4

Mantle moves. The Mantle Slide takes you from a mantle straight into a slide, which Infinity Ward calls a first for the series; Mantle Momentum keeps your forward speed through the mantle; and Mantle Steering lets you steer, aim down sights or cancel in the middle of a mantle (Call of Duty).

Supine Slide. Double-tap crouch during a sprint for a longer, lower slide that ends on your back, feet first (Call of Duty). Dexerto notes that it slows your aim-down-sights time, so you are slower to aim coming out of it.

Pipes and ledges. Pipe Climb lets you climb up or down the pipes on buildings, and the Fast Pipe Slide drops you down a vertical pipe if you slide into it while holding crouch. Hang Shimmy moves you left or right while hanging from a ledge, Hang Lean lets you lean and turn a full 360 degrees while hanging and aiming, and the Climbing Jump launches you in any direction from a hang, ladder or pipe (Call of Duty). Dexerto adds that the ledge hang is faster than in Modern Warfare 2.

Tactical Sprint and the Blood Rush perk

Tactical Sprint is not available by default at launch: it comes with the Blood Rush perk in the Perk 2 slot (launch patch notes). To make up for that, Infinity Ward removed the extra sprint-out penalty Tactical Sprint usually carries. In Modern Warfare 4 Tactical Sprint also changes your posture and stride as stamina runs down, instead of being a fixed burst (Call of Duty). The default sprint input is "single tap run", with "double tap" and "single tap sprint" as options. Perks are listed on Perks. The clip is GamingBolt on Tactical Sprint changing posture and stride as stamina runs down.

Movement changes from the beta

Beta Weekend 2 on Aug 28, 2026 slowed movement down: Tactical Sprint moved to Blood Rush, its speed was cut 4% and its sprint-to-fire time matched normal sprint; slide distance was cut 10%, slide speed 9%, and the delay before jumping out of a slide went up; stamina was cut 8%. Knife and pistol sprint speeds went up, and a mantle-height bug was fixed. A day later, aim-down-sights movement speed rose 6 to 10% and sprint speed 3 to 5%, depending on weapon class.

Since the beta, Infinity Ward also fixed mismatches between how enemies moved in first and third person, which had allowed "a few snaking opportunities" (launch patch notes).

Time to kill

Activision has published no TTK figures in milliseconds as of Oct 25, 2026. What Infinity Ward has said: for Beta Weekend 2 every weapon was retuned to raise the time to kill slightly without changing base health, and sniper flinch was raised 28% (beta patch notes). Players strongly preferred that tuning at all skill levels, so it stayed for launch, with SMGs made more efficient at close to mid range and one-hit-kill weapons tempered through flinch and damage tuning (launch patch notes). Weapons with fewer than 60 reserve rounds got an extra magazine in the beta because of the slower TTK.

Multiplayer and DMZ have separate weapon tuning, and Infinity Ward said on Oct 23 that it was looking at weapon tuning for the week after launch. Changes are on Patch Notes, and the weapons that win under this TTK on Best Weapons.

Gunplay: bloom, recoil and the view

Hipfire has no bloom: shots go where the weapon points, while sway, recoil, movement and handling still affect accuracy (Call of Duty). The weapon and the world render in one field of view, muzzle effects are masked at the point of aim, and depth of field keeps the point of aim sharp. On PC, Enhanced FOV widens the edges of the view without changing the center, and depth of field is split into World and Weapon settings (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026). A 1st Person Camera Movement setting under Camera can be lowered to Minimal (25%) (beta patch notes). Recommended values are on Best Settings.

Aim assist was reduced for Beta Weekend 2, a global change that also reached Warzone, and Infinity Ward said it was "not the exact tuning we want" (beta patch notes).

Infinity Ward's three weapon pillars are Distinction, Balance and Feel, and Gunsmith shows Advanced Weapon Stats at launch (launch patch notes). The Multiplayer Firing Range has targets at 10, 25, 50 and 100 meters with accuracy, damage and TTK readouts, moving targets and a recoil plate (Call of Duty, Oct 19, 2026), the best place to measure a weapon's real time to kill yourself. Practice: Proving Grounds

Proving Grounds is Modern Warfare 4's training course, with movement Tutorials and timed Courses graded up to an S Rating (Call of Duty). It builds on the beta's Mobility Course and adds combat training in the same place (launch patch notes). The Mobility Course also has its own Calling Card challenges in Shared Mode Mastery (Call of Duty). Other modes are on Game Modes.
