This is the meta before any post-launch tuning; Infinity Ward said on Oct 23 that it was looking at weapon tuning for the week after launch. Best assault rifle

6:04 Three assault rifles share the top. The M4 (Level 14) is the pick of GameSpot, GamesRadar+ and Game Rant, which calls its M4 Hurricane Apex a must-use. It fires at 810 rounds per minute, the fastest of the eight. The clip is LunchTime calling the M4 "disgusting" in Modern Warfare 4.

1:40 The Han 86 is the best rifle you have from the start: it unlocks at Level 4, sits in Dexerto's S tier, and GameSpot builds it for mid to long range. Its sprint-to-fire time dropped from 210 to 185ms after the first beta weekend, per Infinity Ward's beta patch notes. The clip is LunchTime ranking the Han 86 fourth: very lethal, but harder to use than the M4.

The Kastov 762 (Level 34) is the hard-hitting choice at 600 rounds per minute; Dexerto, GamesRadar+, Game Rant and Insider Gaming all recommend it. For a different style, Game Rant rates the Hyeon Burst the top assault rifle for damage per shot and says a neck shot can make one burst a headshot kill.

Best SMG

The ISO Nightshade is the SMG every outlet names. GamesRadar+ calls it "Modern Warfare 4's most dominant weapon" even after cuts to its headshot multiplier and long-range performance, and it unlocks at Level 4 with a 923 rounds per minute fire rate (Activision's weapons blog).

3:23 The VEL 46 (Level 5) is the other S-tier SMG. Game Rant calls it "easily the best weapon in its category", and GameSpot uses it as its close-range class with the VEL 46 Snap Apex and Overkill. It fires at 952 rounds per minute from a 40-round magazine. The clip is LunchTime calling the VEL 46 his favorite SMG so far.

The PPSh-41 (Level 30) has the highest fire rate in the game at 1,110 rounds per minute, and GamesRadar+ says it can "rack up dozens of kills" on small maps such as Transit 213. Shipment, another small map, arrives on Oct 27, 2026. The X-58 Nyx is A tier for Dexerto.

Best sniper and marksman rifle

The KG-7 Vulcan is the best sniper rifle for GamesRadar+, which credits its fast rechamber for quickscoping and a one-shot kill to the chest; GameSpot also builds it, and it unlocks at Level 4. GamesRadar+ says the Signal 50 suits Ground War and Warzone better than 6v6.

Among marksman rifles, Dexerto puts the bolt-action Mosin-Nagant (Level 36) in its S tier, the only gun outside the assault rifles and SMGs at the top. The MAR-9 and Oris 8.6 sit in C.

Best LMG, shotgun and secondary

No LMG reaches Dexerto's top two tiers. GameSpot's pick is the FiNN LMG, available at Level 4 with a 100-round belt. Both shotguns, the Rezi 12 and Warlord, are C tier for Dexerto.

For the secondary slot, GameSpot builds the SANG 9mm with its SANG Breach Apex, a one-shell 12-gauge underbarrel. Dexerto rates the SANG 9mm and Krait P68 in B and the .50 GS and Mojave .357 in D. You can also replace the secondary with a second primary through the Overkill Perk.

How the meta moved since the beta

The Open Beta in August 2026 shaped launch tuning. After the first weekend, Infinity Ward's beta patch notes list faster aim-down-sights times for the ISO Nightshade, X-58 Nyx, PPSh-41, FiNN LMG, Type 73, Rezi 12, Signal 50 and KG-7 Vulcan, faster sprint-to-fire for the Han 86, M4, Kastov 762 and Patriot XMR, and a slightly longer time to kill for every weapon, with snipers taking 28% more flinch.

For launch, the launch patch notes say players strongly preferred the second weekend's time to kill, SMGs were made more efficient at close to mid range, and one-hit-kill weapons were tempered with flinch and damage tuning. Two days in, the outlets' rankings fit that: SMGs and assault rifles fill the top tiers, and the ISO Nightshade, VEL 46, M4, Han 86 and Kastov 762 appear on nearly every list. DMZ is tuned separately

Multiplayer and DMZ have separate ("bespoke") weapon tuning, the launch patch notes say, so a gun's Multiplayer ranking does not carry straight over to Hajin. As of Oct 25, 2026 none of the outlets above has published a DMZ weapon ranking.
