Steam Player Count
Steam has no player count for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 alone, because the game runs inside the shared "Call of Duty" app (1938090) with Warzone, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. All Call of Duty on Steam had 217,019 players at 17:01 UTC on Oct 25, 2026, and peaked at 227,622 at MW4's launch, about double Black Ops 7's launch but below Black Ops 6's.
No one can give a Steam player count for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 by itself: Steam counts Modern Warfare 4 players in the shared "Call of Duty" app, 1938090, together with Warzone, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, while Modern Warfare 4's own store app, 4435490, shows almost nobody because the game is launched from the shared app. That shared app had 217,019 players at 17:01 UTC on Oct 25, 2026, two days after launch. The press, quoting SteamDB, put the shared app's launch peak at 227,622, about double Black Ops 7's launch. The chart at the top of the home page is labeled "All Call of Duty on Steam" for the same reason.

Why Steam cannot count Modern Warfare 4 alone
Modern Warfare 4 is not a separate program on Steam. Activision ships it inside the connected Call of Duty install, which Warzone shares, so the games share content and you can switch between them in one session (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026). Buying Modern Warfare 4 on Steam unlocks it inside that install, and Steam records the play time against the install's app, not the store product.
| Steam app | What it is | What its player count shows |
|---|---|---|
| 4435490 | The Modern Warfare 4 store product: $69.99, Windows | Almost nobody: 1 player at 17:01 UTC on Oct 25, 2026 |
| 1938090 | "Call of Duty", free, released Oct 27, 2022; "supports Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone" and sells Call of Duty Points for those games and Black Ops 6 | Everyone playing any of them: 217,019 at 17:01 UTC on Oct 25, 2026 |
| 4783780 | "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 - Beta" | The August 2026 beta only |
Sources: Steam appdetails, 4435490 and 1938090, read Oct 25, 2026; Steam Web API for 4435490 and 1938090, read at 17:01 UTC on Oct 25, 2026.
GameSpot describes the shared app as "the multi-game launcher that includes Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Warzone" (GameSpot, Mar 23, 2026), and Notebookcheck notes that because SteamDB's tracker covers several Call of Duty games, "it's difficult to evaluate an individual title" (Notebookcheck, Oct 17, 2026). So any "MW4 Steam player count" you read is really all Call of Duty on Steam. The shared app's jumps around Modern Warfare 4's dates still show its effect, because the other games in it were already out.
Steam is also only part of the audience. Modern Warfare 4 sells on Battle.net and Xbox on PC as well, and on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 (Platforms and Cross-play), none of which publish live counts. Activision had announced no sales or total player figures as of Oct 25, 2026 (Call of Duty, Oct 23, 2026).
Current count: all Call of Duty on Steam
Steam's public API reported 217,019 players in the shared Call of Duty app at 17:01 UTC on Sunday, Oct 25, 2026, against 1 in the Modern Warfare 4 store app at the same minute. Twenty minutes earlier, at 16:41 UTC, the shared app had 216,969. The chart on Vi.ki's home page adds Steam's count every hour, labeled "All Call of Duty on Steam".
Peaks reported in early access and at launch
These are SteamDB's measured peaks for the shared app, as the press reported them on the dates given. Vi.ki has not taken them from SteamDB directly.
| Moment | Peak, all Call of Duty on Steam | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Beta, first day (its own app 4783780), Aug 21, 2026 | 115,145, falling under 38,000 later that weekend | Notebookcheck, Aug 24, 2026 |
| First day of Campaign Early Access, Oct 16, 2026 | Over 108,000 | Notebookcheck, Oct 17, 2026 |
| Launch, Oct 23, 2026 | 227,622 | Tech4Gamers, Oct 25, 2026 |
The beta number is the cleanest Modern Warfare 4 figure Steam has: the beta was a separate install with its own app (Steam), so only beta players counted. SteamDB's own post that day was titled "Beta peaks at 115k players" (Steam News, Aug 21, 2026). Notebookcheck tied the 65% drop over that weekend to complaints about performance, aim assist, spawns and a too-short time to kill. More on Open Beta.
The early access peak counted only people playing the campaign early (Multiplayer had not opened) plus everyone in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, which is why it sits below the launch peak. DMZ Early Access followed on Oct 20 (Early Access).
Compared with Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7
Notebookcheck reported that the first early-access day already topped Black Ops 7's launch weekend of roughly 100,000. At launch Tech4Gamers put the peak at about double Black Ops 7's, but below Black Ops 6's launch of over 315,000; Notebookcheck gives Black Ops 6 313,000. Both comparisons are shared-app peaks, so they compare Call of Duty on Steam in each launch week rather than the games alone.
Steam reviews
The Modern Warfare 4 store app does collect its own reviews. On Oct 25, 2026 it was "Very Positive", with 81% of 4,226 English reviews positive. During campaign early access TechSpot called it the best-reviewed Call of Duty on Steam since 2010's Black Ops, against Black Ops 7's 38.7% and Black Ops 6's 45.7% (TechSpot, Oct 19, 2026). Critics' scores are on Reception and Reviews.
