Development and Reveal

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was developed by Infinity Ward, led by co-studio heads Jack O'Hara and Mark Grigsby, with Beenox on PC, Digital Legends on Nintendo Switch 2 and other Activision studios in support. Activision revealed it on May 28, 2026 with a trailer of North Korea invading the South, showed it through the From The Ward video series, Fanatics Fest, Call of Duty: NEXT and an August beta, and released it on Oct 23, 2026.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, with the PC version made in partnership with Beenox and the Nintendo Switch 2 version built natively with Digital Legends. Activision revealed it on May 28, 2026 at 8:00 AM PT with a trailer in which "War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion", and opened pre-orders the same day. Over the next five months Infinity Ward showed it through its From The Ward videos, a first hands-on at Fanatics Fest in New York, the Call of Duty: NEXT broadcast and a two-weekend beta, before the game launched on Oct 23, 2026. It is the finale of the four-game Modern Warfare reboot that began in 2019, and Windows Central notes it is the first under studio heads Jack O'Hara and Mark Grigsby (Windows Central, Oct 17, 2026). The clip is From The Ward's second episode, in which O'Hara and Grigsby recall taking over Infinity Ward.

Studios

Infinity Ward led development. Steam lists the developers as Infinity Ward, Beenox, Digital Legends, Activision Shanghai, Raven Software, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and High Moon Studios, and Activision's announcement adds the central design, technology and QA teams and Demonware among the support studios. Beenox partnered on the PC version for Battle.net, Xbox on PC and Steam.

The Switch 2 version is a native build by Infinity Ward and Digital Legends, the studio Activision Blizzard acquired in 2021, which had helped ship Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and assisted on Black Ops 6 and 7 (GamesRadar+, May 28, 2026). Co-studio head Jack O'Hara told GamesRadar+ the game got running on the hardware quickly once the team had it. The port follows the 10-year agreement Microsoft signed with Nintendo in February 2023 during its purchase of Activision Blizzard, and it is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo system since Ghosts on Wii U in 2013. See Nintendo Switch 2 Version.

Engine and technology

Activision has published no engine version; Digital Foundry's Tom Morgan calls it Infinity Ward's IW Engine. The new technology Infinity Ward talked about most is Ballistic Authority, a "weapon-first technology stack" that removes bloom from hipfire, rebuilds recoil and convergence and refines depth of field for visibility (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026). The official site sums it up as "no bloom, no guesswork, no doubt" (Call of Duty).

Modern Warfare 4 was built only for current hardware, the first Call of Duty in 13 years without a PS4 and Xbox One version (Dexerto, May 28, 2026). It supports ray tracing in the campaign, multiplayer and DMZ, and on PC upscalers and frame generation from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026). Steam's AI disclosure says the team "uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets" (Steam). See PC Requirements and Install Size.

Why Korea

Infinity Ward set the campaign mainly on the Korean Peninsula, including missions inside North Korea, a first for the series. Its developers told Dexerto they chose Korea partly because Korean culture, from food and cinema to K-pop, has spread worldwide (Dexerto, May 28, 2026). Mark Grigsby told PCGamesN that South Korean advisors guided dialect, culture and casting, and that some writing and story beats changed after a dialect coach's notes; about half the game is large-scale war, the rest tactical special operations (PCGamesN, Jul 25, 2026). Narrative director Jeff Negus said that since there had "never been a 4 in Modern Warfare", the team could redefine what a Modern Warfare game means, and Alex Norris spoke of returning to the series' roots of big war (Game Rant, May 31, 2026). The logo writes the 4 as the Korean syllable for four. See Story. In the clip, from From The Ward's first episode, the developers call it a return to big war and to the roots of Call of Duty, North against South.

The reveal

On the morning of May 28, 2026, the official Call of Duty YouTube channel ran a looping live broadcast of a burning building and a 30-second teaser of soldiers entering a convenience store (MP1st, May 28, 2026). Bodycam footage in the teaser showed Korean soldiers in a city hit by a missile, confirming the Korean setting (TweakTown, May 28, 2026). A date stamp in the teaser read 2026-10-28, which MP1st took as a possible release date; the announced date was Oct 23.

The full reveal came at 8:00 AM PT with the Reveal Trailer, the release date, all four platforms and the tagline "Warfare Without Limits". Editions and pre-orders went live at once on Xbox, PS5, Battle.net and Steam, and Infinity Ward's Alex Norris and Jeff Negus gave the first campaign details on Xbox Wire (Call of Duty, Oct 5, 2026). A Key Art Behind The Scenes video followed on Jun 1. See Editions and Pre-order Bonuses.

Showing the modes

Kill Block was revealed on Jul 15, 2026 as a modular training facility with more than 500 layouts, and was the first thing the public played: four days of 10v10 Gunfight at Fanatics Fest NYC in July. DMZ got its first look at the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7, 2026, then two Deep Dives in October on Hajin and the Forward Operating Base. The campaign was shown through the Losing Ground first look on Jul 30, the full mission Entrenched in the beta, and a Tokyo Game Show trailer on Sep 17 introducing Price's hunt for "The Archer". The multiplayer reveal came with the Aug 19 trailer and Call of Duty: NEXT on Aug 21, which Activision followed by opening the beta two hours later. See Kill Block, DMZ, Open Beta and Release Date and Launch Times.

Controversies before launch

Besides the visual recoil debate, a promotional image published before Gamescom with odd details was pulled, and a social media representative called it a temporary render published by mistake; players also suspected generative-AI art in beta maps (Game Rant, Aug 23, 2026). The decision to keep Modern Warfare 4 off Game Pass until Holiday 2027 and to end Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One at Season 1 also drew complaints. How the finished game was received is on Reception and Reviews.
