Platforms and Cross-play
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net and Xbox on PC) and Nintendo Switch 2, with cross-play and cross-progression across all of them through an Activision account. It is not on PS4 or Xbox One, and it is not on Game Pass until Holiday 2027 at the earliest.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 runs on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and all four play together: cross-play and cross-progression are supported across platforms, Switch 2 included (Call of Duty, Aug 26, 2026). On PC it is sold on Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026). It is the first Call of Duty in 13 years not released on PS4 and Xbox One, and it is not included with Game Pass at launch.

Platforms and stores
Activision announced Modern Warfare 4 on May 28, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and it launched on all of them on Oct 23, 2026 (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026). The PC version is led by Infinity Ward with Beenox and sold on Battle.net, the Xbox app (Xbox on PC) and Steam, where the store app is 4435490. The Switch 2 version is a native port made with Digital Legends; it has its own page, Nintendo Switch 2 Version.

An Xbox Store purchase is Xbox Play Anywhere: one purchase covers both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026). Every other upgrade stays on its platform: the Vault Edition upgrade must be bought on the platform of the original purchase, and physical copies cannot be upgraded. Prices and contents are on Editions and Pre-order Bonuses.
The PlayStation Store lists support for up to 60 online players, PS5 Pro Enhanced, and DualSense vibration and trigger effects. PlayStation Universe reports 4K and 120Hz with VRR on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and on PS5 Pro PSSR 2.0 and an unlocked frame rate with VRR and 120Hz on (PlayStation Universe, Jul 16, 2026).
Is Modern Warfare 4 on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. Activision says the game is "built natively for current-generation consoles and PC" and is not available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026). Dexerto notes it is the first Call of Duty in 13 years to skip both (Dexerto, May 28, 2026). In the clip BenchmarKing calls it the first Call of Duty to launch only on current-generation consoles and PC.
Warzone is leaving the old consoles too. It stopped being available for new downloads on PS4 and Xbox One on June 4, 2026, its in-game store there closed on June 25, 2026, and it stops being playable on those consoles when Season 1 launches (Call of Duty, May 28, 2026), on Nov 6, 2026. The launch patch notes also removed or shortened pre-game countdown timers that had been "originally intended to give previous generation consoles time to load" (Call of Duty, Oct 21, 2026). See Season 1 and Roadmap and Warzone Integration.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?
No, not at launch. Activision's Oct 15 post says Modern Warfare 4 launches as a standalone release and "it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027" (Call of Duty, Oct 15, 2026). Game Pass Ultimate keeps the older games Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 3. The Xbox Store says the same ("not eligible for XBOX Game Pass until Holiday 2027"), adds that online multiplayer on Xbox needs Game Pass Essential, and that cloud play needs Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate plus a purchase of the game (Xbox, read Oct 25, 2026). GameSpot also notes that DMZ, once free alongside Warzone, is now part of the $70 purchase.
Cross-play
Cross-play covers every platform, Switch 2 included (Call of Duty, Aug 26, 2026). At the reveal Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O'Hara told GamesRadar+: "Right now we support crossplay between Switch 2 and the rest of the platforms" (GamesRadar+, May 28, 2026). Playing the beta with cross-play on, Kotaku "rarely encountered" Switch 2 players, who carry a platform icon in the lobby (Kotaku, Sep 1, 2026). In the clip Nintendo Life's review says Switch 2 owners get the entire package, with cross-play and cross-progression.
As of Oct 25, 2026 Activision has not published a Modern Warfare 4 page on where the cross-play setting sits or which platforms may turn it off, and Vi.ki found no launch guide from an allowed outlet that shows the menu, so we do not give a path here yet.
Cross-progression
Signing in with one Activision account carries your progression across supported platforms (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026). An Activision account is required on every platform, and the Xbox Store warns that "a mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may be required" (Xbox, read Oct 25, 2026). Progress is also shared between modes: DMZ play in early access counted toward Player, Weapon and camo progress carried into Multiplayer at launch (Call of Duty, Oct 19, 2026), and from Season 1 Warzone XP counts toward the same Player Level. How levels work is on Ranks and Unlocks.
One Call of Duty install
Modern Warfare 4 lives inside the connected Call of Duty install alongside Warzone, which shares content between games to reduce file sizes and lets you switch titles in one session (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026). During setup you choose which content packs to download. On PS5, automatic downloads could start the pre-install without that choice, so Activision advised turning automatic downloads off first, and choosing Warzone before Season 1 installs the current live Warzone, not the Modern Warfare 4 version (Call of Duty, Oct 21, 2026). Sizes per platform are on PC Requirements and Install Size.
On PC and PS5 most data patches no longer need a restart at launch; Switch 2 still needs restarts for data patches (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026).
Steam, Battle.net or Xbox on PC?
All three PC stores play together and share progress through your Activision account, and the PC rules are the same on each: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot must be on (Anti-Cheat, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot). The differences Activision and Steam list:
- Shaders. Shader preloading debuted in the beta enabled on Battle.net from the first install, while Steam still compiled shaders once on first boot (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026). For launch Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app whatever store you buy from, so Advanced Shader Delivery sends precompiled shaders at install (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026).
- Phone number. Steam's store says "A mobile phone number must be linked to your Steam Account to play Modern Warfare 4" (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026).
- Xbox on PC comes with an Xbox Store purchase through Play Anywhere, so one purchase also covers an Xbox Series X|S.
- Player counts. Steam counts Modern Warfare 4 inside the shared "Call of Duty" app, so no Steam chart shows Modern Warfare 4 alone (Steam Player Count).
Steam lists Windows only, and Vi.ki found no official statement on Steam Deck support as of Oct 25, 2026.
