PC Requirements and Install Size

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 needs at least a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600, 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 970, GTX 1060, RX 470 or Arc A580 on Windows 10, plus TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and 115 GB on an SSD. The recommended spec (Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700K, 16 GB, RTX 3060 Ti) targets 90 fps on High; console downloads run from about 77 GB on Switch 2 to about 194 GB on Xbox.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 runs on PCs from an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 with 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 970 or 1060, Radeon RX 470 or Arc A580, on 64-bit Windows 10, and it needs 115 GB of free space on an SSD at every tier (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026). Activision's recommended spec targets 90 fps in Multiplayer on High settings, and a third tier covers ray tracing at 4K. Every PC must also have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot turned on to play online.

System requirements

Activision published three tiers on Sep 29, 2026. There is no separate "competitive" or 4K Ultra tier without ray tracing; the third tier, which Activision calls "Ultra specs", is for High ray tracing at 4K with upscaling.

Steam's store page repeats these tiers with one difference: it lists a GeForce RTX 3060 for Recommended, where callofduty.com says RTX 3060 Ti. Steam also notes that trial, beta and Insider builds of Windows may not be supported, and asks for an "SSD with 115 GB available space at launch".

Other requirements in Activision's list: DirectX 12 and a broadband connection, Resizable BAR on Intel Arc cards, and a processor with AVX (only Intel and AMD processors are supported) (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026). Activision's support page adds that Windows 10 must be version 22H2 or later, and that the TPM 2.0 requirement needs an Intel 8th Gen or newer or an AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer processor, or a discrete TPM chip. How to turn both features on is on Anti-Cheat, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

The beta's specs were different, so ignore guides written in August: its minimum was a Ryzen 5 1600 or i5-8400 with 12 GB of RAM (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026).

Install size on every platform

Activision published a size only for PC. The console figures below come from store listings that others read, and every patch changes them.

Platform Size Source and date
PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox on PC) 115 GB on an SSD; "Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates" Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026
PS5 About 117 GB without Warzone: Campaign Pack 42.171 GB, main package 28.702 GB, Shared Content Pack 01 19.602 GB; Warzone Pack 42.033 GB more Twisted Voxel, Oct 13, 2026
PS5, every pack About 160 GB including Warzone Beebom, Oct 13, 2026
Xbox Series X and S About 194.32 GB in pre-load listings Twisted Voxel, Oct 13, 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 84.9 GB on the eShop listing (Aug 26); 77.304 GB in a later reading Final Weapon, Aug 26, 2026; Twisted Voxel, Oct 13, 2026

The game is split into content packs inside the connected Call of Duty install shared with Warzone, so you can leave out what you do not play, such as the Campaign Pack after finishing the story, or Warzone until Season 1 (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026). Beebom called the PS5 total the biggest Call of Duty yet. More on the shared install is on Platforms and Cross-play; the Switch 2 download is on Nintendo Switch 2 Version.

PC features

Activision lists more than 800 settings across graphics, gameplay, input, interface and more, and the game configures itself for your hardware on first boot. The headline features (Call of Duty, Sep 29, 2026):

  • Upscaling and frame generation: NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3, and Filmic SMAA T2X, the default, with a sharpness slider that works with every upscaler.
  • Displays: 4K, 1440p and 1080p, standard and ultrawide, and HDR10+.
  • Enhanced FOV: a PC-only setting that widens the view near the screen edges with lens effects without changing the center field of view.
  • Depth of field split into World and Weapon settings, and Weapon VFX Masking, which hides muzzle effects at the point of aim.
  • Sub-frame mouse polling for more precise aiming.
  • Ray tracing in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ.
  • Benchmark Tool: a simulated multiplayer run reporting average fps, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency for each zone, with suggested settings.
  • Advanced Shader Delivery: precompiled shaders at install; Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app whatever store you bought from so they arrive at install.

What to set for frame rate and visibility is on Best Settings.

How it runs at launch

DSOGaming's day-one analysis of the campaign found most GPUs it tested above 60 fps at 1080p and 1440p on Extreme without ray tracing, with the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 7900 XTX ahead of the GeForce RTX 5080, and traversal stutters in the campaign (DSOGaming, Oct 23, 2026). It also reported three limits: turning ray tracing on disables every upscaler, the game forces Variable Rate Shading with ray tracing or with DLSS, FSR or XeSS, and there is no Ray Reconstruction. DSOGaming called that ray tracing restriction "inexcusable", and noted that the benchmark tool sits behind Multiplayer. In the clip BenchmarKing finds the same ray tracing limits: it works only with Filmic SMAA, not with DLSS, and has no Ray Reconstruction.

Steam or Battle.net, and Steam Deck

The game is the same on Steam, Battle.net and Xbox on PC, with cross-play and shared progression. In the beta, shader preloading was on from the first install on Battle.net while Steam compiled once on first boot (Call of Duty, Aug 19, 2026), and Steam requires a mobile phone number linked to your Steam account (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026). Steam lists the game for Windows only. Vi.ki found no official statement on Steam Deck or Linux as of Oct 25, 2026, and Activision writes the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirement for Windows 10 and 11 only.
