Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 out forSince Oct 23, 2026

Beginner's Guide

In your first hours of Modern Warfare 4, set sensitivity, FOV and audio, play the campaign for eight Operators and five XP tokens, reach Level 4 for Create-a-Class, learn that Tactical Sprint lives on the Blood Rush perk, expect a 5-kill UAV, and treat DMZ as a mode where you can lose your gear.

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 your first hours should go to four things: setting up your controls and audio, playing the campaign for its free Operators and XP tokens, reaching Player Level 4 so you can build your own classes, and learning the few rules that differ from recent Call of Duty games: Tactical Sprint is a perk, there is no omnimovement, killstreaks count kills rather than score, and DMZ can take your gear. The game launched on Oct 23, 2026 with Multiplayer, DMZ and a 16-mission campaign. This guide gathers the first steps with what Infinity Ward and guide outlets advise, each named, and links to the full pages.

Quick facts

Modes Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ (no Zombies)

Set up before your first match

Start with sensitivity. Dexerto's day-one tips (Nathan Warby, Oct 21, 2026) say to lower it if you keep overshooting enemies and raise it if turning to face them feels slow, then check field of view, button layout and audio. Sound matters: Dexerto stresses hearing whether footsteps are above or below you, especially in Search and Destroy, so play with headphones.

Check your sprint setting. Tactical Sprint is not on by default in Modern Warfare 4: it is part of the Blood Rush perk, and with Blood Rush equipped, pressing sprint triggers Tactical Sprint by default, per Infinity Ward's launch patch notes. You can change that in the Movement advanced settings, where the sprint input also offers "double tap" and "single tap sprint". If the view bob bothers you, the 1st Person Camera Movement setting goes down to Minimal (25%). Settings by platform are on Best Settings.

On PC, online play needs TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot turned on; the Call of Duty Secure Attestation Wizard checks your setup, as Activision's PC post explains. See Anti-Cheat, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

Play the campaign first

The campaign is the best place to start, and not only for the story. Its 16 mission rewards include eight Base Operators (Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park), three Double XP Tokens, two Double Weapon XP Tokens, a Calling Card, a Loading Screen and an Emblem, and all of them work in Multiplayer and DMZ, per Activision's list. The rewards are the same on any of the six difficulties, Game Rant confirms, so you can play on Recruit and keep the tokens for when you start grinding. It also teaches the new movement in a safe setting. See Campaign Walkthrough and Campaign Rewards and Difficulty.

Your first levels

Until Level 4 you choose from premade Default Loadouts; Demolition unlocks at Level 2 and Sniper at Level 3. Create-a-Class opens at Level 4 with a strong starting set: the Han 86 assault rifle, ISO Nightshade SMG, Rezi 12 shotgun, FiNN LMG, MAR-9, KG-7 Vulcan, Sang 9mm pistol and PILA launcher. The VEL 46 SMG follows at Level 5 and the M4 at Level 14. Dexerto's tier list (Oct 23, 2026) puts the Han 86, ISO Nightshade, VEL 46 and M4 in its top tier, so you can be competitive from your first custom class. Every level's unlocks are on Ranks and Unlocks.

Each loadout now has its own Operator and its own killstreaks, both chosen in Create-a-Class, as the Oct 19 blog explains. If you are unsure which attachments to pick, "Gunny", the Attachment Optimizer in Create-a-Class, builds suggested Short Range, Balanced and Long Range versions from what you have unlocked. A Firing Range in Multiplayer (and one in the DMZ base) has dummies at 10, 25, 50 and 100 meters with damage, accuracy and time-to-kill readouts, which is the quickest way to feel a new build.

For starter builds, Dexerto suggests an ISO Nightshade with the FSS Crackdown muzzle, ZLR MAG-Z 9" barrel, Mire-50 Tac Grip, Pulse-MW Laser and EXP G2-44 Stock, and GameSpot (Oct 23, 2026) a Han 86 for mid to long range with the XRK Mil-Tac Suppressor, SA H86 465MM barrel, XRK Clutch-LS laser, Mini Reflex and XRK Justice II Grip. More builds are on Best Loadouts and Best Weapons.

Perks: pick one from each column

Perks use a Pick 3 system: one from each of three categories, six perks in each. Several of the strongest arrive in your first 30 levels.

Perk Slot Level What it does
Quick Fix Perk 1 4 Kills and objective play start health regeneration at once
Overkill Perk 1 4 Carry two primary weapons
Ghost Perk 1 24 Hidden from UAVs, Portable Radars, Heartbeat Sensors and enemy callouts
Blood Rush Perk 2 4 Enables Tactical Sprint; kills refill stamina
Hardline Perk 2 4 Killstreaks cost one kill less
Bomb Squad Perk 2 16 Less damage from non-killstreak explosives, immune to Knockdown
Fast Hands Perk 2 20 Faster reloads, equipment use and weapon swaps
Ninja Perk 2 30 Much quieter footsteps
Battle Hardened Perk 3 12 Cuts most effects of Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mine

Dexerto's perk tier list (Oct 24, 2026) rates Bomb Squad, Ghost and Ninja highest, with Battle Hardened, Fast Hands and Quick Fix next, and puts Blood Rush lower. Note that Ninja and Blood Rush share the Perk 2 slot with Bomb Squad and Fast Hands, so you are choosing between speed, stealth and survival. All 18 are on Perks.

Movement: what is different

Modern Warfare 4 has no omnimovement: you cannot sprint and dive in every direction as in recent Black Ops games, and Infinity Ward's line, quoted by Dexerto, was "It's okay for Modern Warfare to be different". Slide canceling returns, along with sliding into aim-down-sights, as Insider Gaming reported at the reveal. New moves include the Mantle Slide (straight from a mantle into a slide), a longer Supine Slide on a double tap of crouch, pipe climbing and fast pipe slides, and shimmying, leaning and jumping from ledge hangs, all described in Infinity Ward's Aug 21 multiplayer blog. Practice them in Proving Grounds, the training course with movement tutorials and timed courses graded up to an S rating (Movement and Gunplay).

Killstreaks, not scorestreaks

Streaks in Modern Warfare 4 are earned with kills, not score; GameSpot's review lists killstreaks in place of scorestreaks among its complaints. Each loadout carries its own, and a Smart Streak Meter also credits objective play such as taking a flag or holding a Hardpoint. Infinity Ward's Oct 19 blog listed costs in tiers of 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 kills, but the Oct 21 launch patch notes kept the beta's increase of one kill on every streak, "meaning UAVs are 5 kills (or 4 kills with the Hardline perk equipped)". Start with the UAV and the low streaks that unlock early, and add the bigger ones as your games improve. Costs and unlocks are on Killstreaks.

Matchmaking and modes

Infinity Ward kept skill-based matchmaking ("Classic matchmaking") at launch despite complaints, and Infinity Ward's Joe Cecot said "our end goal is that every match is a good match", as Dexerto reported on Oct 23, 2026. Expect even matches rather than easy ones. For learning maps, Dexerto notes that a quiet area in Team Deathmatch can become the main fight in Hardpoint or Domination, so play the objective modes you like and learn each map's lanes there. The new modes are Inflation, Hijack, Collateral and Combat Outpost; Hardcore adds a limited HUD, friendly fire and lower health with no regeneration, per the official modes blog. See Game Modes and Multiplayer Maps.

Dexerto's aim advice for the first week is to pre-aim the angles where enemies appear rather than relying on reactions, practice controlling recoil on moving targets, and learn "snaking" (dipping in and out of cover with your crosshair centered). Playing with a regular squad helps most in Domination, Hardpoint and Search and Destroy.

DMZ basics

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode against AI forces and other squads in Hajin, and it is part of the paid game rather than a free mode with Warzone, GameSpot's review notes. Game Rant lists Hajin at 60 players in 20 squads. What you take in can be lost: esports.gg warns that if you die you lose the weapon and must spend cash to get it back. The upside is progress: DMZ XP counts toward your Player Level as well as DMZ's own 70-level track, and weapon levels and camos earned there carry into Multiplayer. Vault Edition owners start with three Active Duty Operator slots instead of two and a Deployment Kit. Before your first deployment, read the DMZ Beginner's Guide; the mode is on DMZ.

What comes next

Shipment joins Multiplayer on Oct 27, 2026, the Halloween modes Possession and Infected follow, and Season 1 starts on Nov 6, 2026 with the first Battle Pass and the move of Warzone to Modern Warfare 4. See Season 1 and Roadmap, and How to Level Up Fast for the grind.
