Mission 5: Losing Ground

Losing Ground is the fifth mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a losing fight to hold Hajin City in which you defend a cafe, fall back to a bridge, fire a truck-mounted mortar and run for a tunnel; it holds the Raining Thunder trophy and unlocks the "Ready Line" Loading Screen.

Losing Ground is the fifth mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: back in Hajin City, Park's squad tries and fails to hold the city against the invasion, the second half of a story that began in Mayhem (PC Gamer, Oct 16, 2026). Its objectives are "Reach the Cafe," "Defend the Cafe," "Reach the Bridge," "Mount the Mortar Launcher" and "Reach the Tunnel," and TheGamer's advice is to use friendly vehicles and solid cover and to "keep moving with your squad" rather than try to hold every position (TheGamer, Oct 25, 2026). The mortar section holds the Raining Thunder trophy, and finishing the mission unlocks the "Ready Line" Loading Screen (Call of Duty, Oct 16, 2026). The clip is Activision's first look at the mission, a night fight through burning streets.

Spoilers for Mission 5 follow.

Reach the cafe

Advance with the squad, clearing the street until you reach a crossroads where a cafe is held by friendly troops, callsign Tiger 0-1. The enemies here wear red night-vision goggles, which makes them easy to tell apart, and you need to: civilians are close by, some hiding in a car near the enemy, and hitting a civilian or an ally fails the mission (Critical Hits, Oct 20, 2026). Hold off on grenades for the same reason. Clear the crossroads and go inside to find your team.

Defend the cafe

Inside, a table lets you refill ammo and swap weapons; Critical Hits points to a Han 86 rifle with an underbarrel grenade launcher there. Hold the windows. Civilians run past down the street, so shoot only confirmed enemies. The attack comes from the right, then the left, then the center, with another wave on top of a rail car; once enough are down, a BMP armored vehicle rolls in, and the squad falls back out through the rear alley (Critical Hits).

Reach the bridge

Fight back through the streets behind the cafe until you see flares marking a bridge held by allied troops; watch your fire as you reach them. An enemy sniper kills the man on the mortar truck. Take out the sniper, then get on the mortar yourself (Critical Hits).

Mount the mortar launcher

The mortar at the back of the truck has no precise reticle: you set the range with the gauge on the left of the screen and correct after each round. Ammunition is unlimited. Shell the groups advancing on the bridge, first from the left and then from the right, checking for civilians, then the soldiers who appear on the rooftops, and finally the BMP that drives onto the road in front of the bridge (Critical Hits).

Raining Thunder trophy

Raining Thunder asks you to "Kill 15 enemies with three mortar rounds in a row in Losing Ground" (Insider Gaming, Oct 19, 2026), which works out to five kills a shot. PowerPyx counts four chances to fire into a crowd: the hill on the left, the street on the right, the rooftop on the right and the street on the right again; if the trophy has not popped after the third, reload the checkpoint (PowerPyx, Oct 18, 2026). Critical Hits adds the obvious: wait for the enemies to bunch up before each round. It can be replayed from mission select if you miss it.

Reach the tunnel

An enemy helicopter destroys the bridge, and you have to jump from the mortar onto the collapsing span and run. Follow Kal through the wreckage and dodge the cars sliding down it, which kill on contact; the mission ends when you reach the others in the tunnel (Critical Hits). Kal is unlocked later as a Base Operator, for finishing Mission 10: Stranded (Call of Duty).

Reward and what comes next

Losing Ground unlocks the "Ready Line" Loading Screen on any difficulty (Call of Duty) and has no collectibles (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). The story cuts back to Price and Valeria in Mission 6: Traffic. All missions are on Campaign Walkthrough, and all rewards on Campaign Rewards and Difficulty.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Raining Thunder in MW4? In Modern Warfare 4's Losing Ground, kill 15 enemies with three mortar rounds in a row, five per round. Wait for enemies to bunch up, and reload the checkpoint if it has not popped by the third of the four chances PowerPyx counts.

How do you aim the mortar in Losing Ground? The MW4 mortar has no precise reticle: set the range with the gauge on the left of the screen and adjust after each round. Its ammunition is unlimited.

What is the reward for Losing Ground in Modern Warfare 4? Finishing Losing Ground unlocks the "Ready Line" Loading Screen in MW4, on any difficulty.

Why did I fail Losing Ground? Hitting civilians or allies fails Modern Warfare 4's Losing Ground; enemies wear red night-vision goggles, so shoot only those, and avoid grenades near civilians.
