Mission 11: Defection

Defection is Modern Warfare 4's eleventh mission, a raid on a North Korean airbase in which Park's squad cuts the power, plants explosives on the missiles, attacks the airbase and escapes by helicopter. It has no collectibles or trophies of its own, and finishing it gives a Double Weapon XP Token.

Spoilers for Mission 11 follow.

Defection is mission 11 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: a raid on a North Korean airbase in which you deactivate a generator, plant explosives, attack the airbase and escape it, the four objectives TheGamer lists. It follows the open mission Mission 10: Stranded and comes before the beach landing of Mission 12: Counter Attack. Finishing it gives a Double Weapon XP Token, the first of the campaign's two. The clip is MrRoflWaffles' playthrough as the squad kills the hangar lights and sets charges on the mobile launchers while reinforcements close in.

Setting

Defection picks up where Stranded ends. KeenGamer's walkthrough says Stranded closes with the squad slipping into an airfield hangar disguised in an enemy truck, and calls Defection a night raid on Air Base 3 in North Korea (in MrRoflWaffles' playthrough the hangar is dark only once the power is cut, and the airfield fight is in daylight), with the goal of crippling the missile launchers stored there and getting everyone out alive. Ko Jin-Hyuk, the North Korean lieutenant who offered to help the squad in Mission 9: Survivors, guides them. In the clip Ko promises to order his forces away from the base, and he has pulled them away by the time the squad reaches the hangar.

Objectives in order

  1. Deactivate the Generator
  2. Plant Explosives
  3. Attack the Airbase
  4. Escape the Airbase

Walkthrough

Deactivate the generator. The raid starts inside the base, in a hangar the squad darkens by cutting the power. Shutting down the generator comes first, before anything is blown up. Stay with the squad and keep the fight small until the charges are set.

Plant explosives. The charges go on the missiles stored at the base, which KeenGamer describes as the launchers you are there to cripple. Clear the area around each plant point before you commit to the interaction.

Attack the airbase. Once the charges are set, the mission opens into a loud fight across the airfield. KeenGamer says control switches from Park to his squadmates Jae and Dunn during this part, and advises using the RPG-8 against the mortars, the BMP and the other armored vehicles on the airfield. TheGamer's tip is to follow the objective markers rather than chase every enemy: clear what blocks your route, then keep moving. The clip runs from an RPG shot through the downed mortars to the BMPs at the gate.

Escape the airbase. The squad fights its way out to a rescue helicopter. KeenGamer says it is a South Korean helicopter that carries the squad away.

Story

KeenGamer says Ri Ju-Young sends troops to the airbase, and that in the control tower Ko turns his rifle on North Korean soldiers, committing to his defection, which gives the mission its name. Ju-Young had made herself Supreme Leader in Mission 8: Assassins after killing her brother, and Insider Gaming's plot walkthrough sums up Ko's arc as defecting to help South Korea. For the full plot, see Story; for the people, Characters and Cast. The clip cuts between Ri on her radio and Ko in the control tower.

Choices, collectibles and trophies

Defection has no collectibles: PowerPyx puts all 90 in Missions 3, 10 and 13. None of the 18 trophies is tied to it, and no guide lists a choice in it. It counts toward finishing the campaign for Hold the Line and, on Realism, Was it Worth It? (Insider Gaming, Oct 19, 2026).

Reward

Finishing Defection gives a Double Weapon XP Token, and Mission 13: Escape gives the other (Call of Duty, Oct 16, 2026). Activision's own list wins over Insider Gaming's mission list (Oct 19, 2026), which gives this mission a regular Double XP Token. A weapon XP token levels a gun faster, so save it for a weapon you are leveling for attachments or camos (see How to Level Up Fast and Camos).
