Mission 3: Following Orders
Following Orders is the third mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a house-to-house search of a North Korean village for a defector played as a North Korean soldier; it holds 4 Notes, contraband, the toolbox code 214 and two trophies, and unlocks a Double XP Token.
Following Orders is the third mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: you play a North Korean soldier going door to door through a North Korean village to find a defector, a mission Windows Central likens to "No Russian" (Windows Central, Oct 17, 2026). GameSpot describes the character as "a high-ranked North Korean soldier who doesn't always agree with the orders he's given," in a mission "filled with public executions" (GameSpot, Oct 16, 2026). Its objectives are "Find Information About the Defector," "Bring the Defector Out Alive" and "Make Sure All Civilians Are Accounted For" (TheGamer, Oct 25, 2026). It is one of only three missions with collectibles, 4 Notes (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026), and finishing it gives a Double XP Token (Call of Duty, Oct 16, 2026).

Spoilers for Mission 3 follow.
How the mission works
This is a mission about talking, searching and choosing, with almost no shooting. You can intimidate or calm the villagers with dialogue, or draw your gun, and the overall story ends the same way whatever you do (GameSpot). TheGamer's advice is to search every room before moving on, take the contraband you find and use it to question the civilians, because talking rather than threatening keeps them unharmed (TheGamer). One thing not to do: shooting a portrait of the Supreme Leader gets you beaten and shot by your own squad, with the death message "you dishonored your country by damaging a portrait of the Supreme Leader" (TheGamer, Oct 21, 2026).
The first house: find information about the defector
Ko asks you to stop the wife leaving by the back door while he questions the husband. Critical Hits notes that you may question the couple or kill them at once, and neither fails the mission; killing them skips ahead, and letting the wife run out the back gets her killed (Critical Hits, Oct 20, 2026). Game Rant lists what you can say to the wife: "Comply, or I can hurt you.", "Please join your husband.", "If you are loyal, you are safe.", "I will not ask again." or "Run while you can.", the last of which sends her fleeing into the garden, where she is shot (Game Rant, Oct 19, 2026).
The house holds two Notes and the contraband, per Game Rant's locations (Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026):
| Item | Kind | Where |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 Player | Contraband | Bathroom cabinet, first door left of the front door |
| Western Novel | Contraband | Cabinet behind the second door on the left |
| Extra Rations | Contraband | Kitchen, behind the second set of white doors |
| Baekseolgi-Tteok Recipe | Note | Kitchen cupboard on the left; it gives the toolbox code |
| Note From Your Friend and Heart Medicine | Note and contraband | Red toolbox in the cupboard of the first room on the right, padlock code 214 (or shoot the lock) |
Sources: Game Rant, Oct 16, 2026; the Extra Rations from IGN's collectibles video, Oct 16, 2026, which counts four pieces of contraband.
What you can ask the husband depends on what you found: the MP3 player (state-sanctioned music, he says), the novel (his son's, which he promises to burn) or the South Korean medicine, which makes him confess a heart condition and give up the defector's location; Game Rant calls the medicine the right question (Game Rant).
No Harm Done trophy
No Harm Done asks you to "Obtain the defector's location in Following Orders without hurting any civilians." Game Rant's method: find all the contraband in the first house, question the man about each item, and harm neither of them (Game Rant).
The second house: bring the defector out alive
After Ko reports to Ri, follow him to the next house and clear its rooms. The defector is in the last room you clear, in the bedroom or the bathroom; wait for Ko to subdue him, then follow them out to rejoin Ri (Critical Hits).
The third house: account for all civilians
You are ordered to search one more house. It holds the last two Notes (Game Rant):
- Note From Your Neighbor: the bedroom cabinet (first door on the left, then the second door on the right).
- Note From Mom: inside the hidden hatch in the kitchen floor, opened with a key from the cupboards near a window, after you get the woman hiding there out.
The woman in the cellar is the mission's second dialogue test. Game Rant found that "Open the hatch, or else." and "The defector was found. It's safe to come out." both work, while "Please open the hatch" and "Okay. Stay hidden." are wrong; with the last, a North Korean soldier is hanged alongside the defector (Game Rant).
No Stone Unturned trophy
No Stone Unturned asks you to "Confiscate all of the contraband and read all of the notes in Following Orders" (Insider Gaming, Oct 19, 2026): the four contraband items and four Notes above. The Notes also count toward Noteworthy, 50 of the 64 Notes in the campaign (PowerPyx, Oct 18, 2026). See Campaign Collectibles.
The hanging
The mission ends with an order to hang the defector. Refuse, and Commander Ri Ju-Young executes the North Korean soldier before the defector is hanged; obey, and the soldier hangs the defector (Game Rant). Insider Gaming's recap says Ri Ju-Young executes the defector and burns the village, and that the defector warns Lieutenant Ko Jin-Hyuk about her (Insider Gaming, Oct 20, 2026), a thread that runs through the North Korean missions; see Story and Characters and Cast.
Reward and what comes next
Following Orders gives a Double XP Token on any difficulty (Call of Duty), one of three in the campaign; see How to Level Up Fast. Next is Mission 4: Hired Gun. All missions are on Campaign Walkthrough.
